An Un-Official Ride Report by Barbara Laird

Our Journey to (and from) March Air Museum at March Air Field.
We all met (Paul, Rick, Joyce, Jerry, Don, Polly, and myself, Barbara) at The Original Pancake House in Orange at 8:30(ish) for breakfast. And because of a couple of unnamed individuals (not revealing the names to protect the innocent) had ordered APPLE PANCAKES, it took FOREVER for our meal to arrive.

Once breakfast was finished, we hit the road. Led by Rick, we went through Anaheim Hills to the 91 Fwy. Passing through Weir Canyon we saw the hills on fire and the sky filled with black smoke. (See Diagram #1). The wind was very gusty, but it was a head wind so none of us got blown off the road. (note to self: get a windshield). Other than that, the trip out there was quite uneventful.

We spent a couple of hours at the Air Museum looking at all the old war planes and taking lots of pictures. Rick made a great tour guide.
On the way back, however, we discovered that the 91 Fwy was closed due to the fire burning out of control, so we had to take a shortcut (See Diagram #2) to get home, going via Ortega Hwy. It seems that the entire County of Orange and Riverside also knew that same secret and took the same shortcut. Going thru Lake Elsinore was brutal … traffic was moving all of 5 miles per hour. I didn’t know that my motorcycle could go that slow without tipping over.

Paul was an excellent lead through Ortega. There were quite a few blind spots caused by the sun and shade, so I just followed Paul’s taillight. If Paul drove off the road, I would have followed. I have always said … if you’re gonna take a fall, make sure you take someone with you.

Then, once out of Ortega Hwy., we took yet another shortcut through Santiago Canyon. (See Diagram #2).

All in all, it was a wonderful ride with a bunch of wonderful people.
